Middleburgh High Advances to Mock Trial Finals

March 15, 2006 – Schoharie County – Tuesday, Middleburgh High School narrowly defeated Hudson High School to advance to the Tri-County Mock Trial Finals to be held on March 23, 2006. Middleburgh will face the winner of Thursday’s semi-final competition between Coxsackie-Athens and Cairo-Durham to be held at the Greene County Courthouse.

The team, comprised of Middleburgh High’s best and brightest, was coached by teacher Derick Kopff. The young attorneys leading the team to victory were Kerri Corcaran, Brian Hesdorfer and Andrew Drifenbach. Witnesses were played by Karen Kernison, Kaitlyn Craig and Myles Moreno.

The prestigious law firm Tully, Rinckey & Associates, sponsor and coordinator of the High School County Mock Trial, hosted a pizza party for all students involved following the trial. Mathew B. Tully, founding partner of one of the region’s largest law firms, said, “It was a great competition; the teams performed very well and had lots of fun.” He hopes that students will be inspired to pursue careers in law as he was during High School Mock Trial.

The Middleburgh High students had the opportunity to argue their case in the Schoharie County Courthouse ceremonial courtroom in front of the Honorable George R. Bartlett III. Judge Bartlett, who presides over Schoharie County, Family and Surrogate Courts, volunteered his evening and helped make the competition a realistic and memorable experience for all those involved. He complimented both teams for all of their hard work, time and preparation, and courteous demeanor in his courtroom.

The mock trial competition is part of a program administered by the New York State Bar Association that promotes citizenship and law-related education in schools throughout New York State. The mock trial competition assists educators in creating opportunities for students to become effective citizens, able to participate fully in a democratic society. The annual Statewide High School Mock Trial Tournament, the nation's largest, provides students with hands-on opportunities to further their understanding of the law, court procedures, and the legal system, while honing their speaking, listening, reading, and reasoning skills. The winner of the Tri-County Final will advance to the prestigious Region III competitions.
